NEW!! MGL AmpWorks - Swanson Cabinets 1968 Marshall Basketweave 1960B 4x12 Replica Cab
AVAILABLE TO ORDER! The NEW MGL AmpWorks - Swanson Cabinets 1968 Marshall basketweave 1960B 4×12 replica cab. These cabs are only available exclusively thru MGL Ampworks. This project has been in the works for about 6 months. Jeff Swanson builds all of our cabs for the MGL Amps line and I've known Jeff for many years. About 6 months ago I asked him if he was willing to go down the rabbit hole of building a detailed replica of my original 1968 Marshall basketweave 1960B 4x12 cab. I let him know upfront that I would probably drive him nuts with details and appointments. He was in and said let's do it!
So together we documented every measurement and detail of my cab. I even gave him the location and measurement for every screw in the cab. He made templates for the baffle board and metal caster cups in the top of the cab. The metal caster cups in the top of a straight basketweave are exclusive to those cabs and were changed to plastic by '71. I gave an original caster cup to the metal shop that makes our amp chassis and they made a run of exact replicas finished in the correct black wrinkle paint finish as the originals. We’re using period correct replica metal handles from Scumback Speakers. Swanson has sourced the exact same cabinet grade Baltic Birch plywood used in the '60's by Marshall. And this plywood still uses the original Urea Formaldehyde glue between layers. Another important wood appointment on the '60's cabs was the use of Fir wood for all of the bracing, trim pieces and the large center post. The Fir has a distinct reddish-brown color. No current builders use the Fir as it's expensive and hard to find in premium grade. Swanson was able to source the Fir being used for these cabs.
We have a limited quantity of very accurate Salt & Pepper basketweave grill cloth from Europe that is an exact match color wise to the unfaded grill cloth on the inside of my ‘68 cab. The color is charcoal grey & cream. The current Marshall and most of the other reissue Salt & Pepper cloth available has an odd yellow hue to it that is not at all correct looking. We also have a limited number of vintage correct 6" gold faced Marshall replica logos. The only correct logo made in a mold from an original that actually fits vintage Marshall amps & cabs.
The base price is for an empty cab that will include: 6” gold faced replica Marshall logo, a red & black twisted wire replica harness cut to correct length with all ends already solder tinned & ready to solder to speaker tabs w/ a black Cliff jack attached, real Cliff speaker jackplate attached with brass nails, a set of correct Fillister head speaker screws & washers and a set of push-in casters. Each cab will be signed & numbered inside the upper left corner of the back panel and will come with a matching certificate made out in the buyers name. We will also be happy to load the cab with your choice of speakers at no extra labor charge, call or email for quote on speaker cost. The prototype cab in the pictures is covered with the real Marshall reissue Levant tolex. Many custom tolex colors are available at no up-charge. The “100” logo in the top left corner is a $50.00 up-charge. We also just got some “Faded Basketweave” grill cloth that is an option at no charge. This will look great with some of the other color tolex choices like purple. As purple came with a 2-tone brown basketweave, not Salt & Pepper. A sample picture of this grill cloth is listed towards the end of the listing pictures. A $500.00 deposit is required to start a cab build.
Lastly, and most important! I loaded the replica cab with a set of early ‘70’s 003 cone 25w Greenbacks to do a fair comparison to my original ‘68 cab. After going back and forth between the 2 cabs for about an hour, the replica is scary close!! The replica has that warm, full and woody tone that’s more in the back, not in your face, and that’s the sound of a basketweave cab. Starting with a warmer sounding cab allows you to run your amp controls more aggressively to open it up. So, all of the time & effort paid off, mission accomplished!
