(Item#229) 2007 Gibson Custom Shop Dave Johnson - Historic Makeovers 1959 Les Paul w/ Full Makeover

$10,000.00
sold out

(Item#229) 2007 Gibson Custom Shop Dave Johnson - Historic Makeovers 1959 Les Paul w/ full makeover including Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. This guitar was sent by the original owner to Historic Makeovers in 2008 when Dave Johnson was doing the work, at that time the owner did not want the truss rod and fingerboard replaced but everything else was done. In 2014 I bought the guitar and decided to add the finishing touch so I sent it back to Dave to replace the truss rod and install a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard w/ celluloid inlays. Dave didn't have any fingerboards so he did me a favor and made this fingerboard from 60 year old Brazilian that's almost black from his personal stash!! The serial number of this guitar is 971332 and I thought a more correct looking 5 digit number with the space would look better so I had Dave re-stamp the back of the headstock "9 7332" and stamp the full number inside the control cavity. 2007 is well known for having some of the best wood and tone from any of the reissue years and this guitar is more proof. 2007 was the last year of Honduran Mahogany for the reissues and it’s more dense and harder than the current Mahogany grown in Fiji. I recently bought this guitar back from the 2nd owner. This is one of THE best sounding reissues I've had over the years and I've had thousands!! Here are the details on the guitar: The burst was sprayed with aniline cherry dye to match and original burst that had faded to Ice Tea that still had red in it, now 16 years later it has faded to more of a Caramel - brownish color and the clear lacquer has also ambered more. So the finish has an old ambered and warm look to it, guitar weighs 9 lbs 3 ounces (yeah I know some of you are thinking, a touch heavy, well the tone will make you forget those few extra ounces in a hurry!!), reshaped "C" neck now measures: 1st fret - .869", 12th fret - 1.007", Parts on the guitar: An older set of Duncan Antiquity pickups that have real ‘50’s long magnets installed & ThroBak aged covers, mounted in OTP - Vintage Haven pickup rings, newer set of aged single line reissue Kluson tuners, TruVintage burst knobs, poker chip and output jackplate, DJ pickguard, new VOS non-wire ABR-1 bridge w/ TruVintage thumbwheels & posts, Pigtail stop tailpiece and studs, just installed a new matched set of VIPots and Russian PIO caps, guitar has a fresh re-fret with Jescar 51100 wire so the fret ends are over the binding. NOTE: The guitar has a headstock repair. when it was shipped to the 2nd owner, the headstock was cracked and opened up but not all of the way thru and there was no wood missing or splintered, was glued and the lacquer touched up and is now undetectable!! (see the close-up pics) Tone wise this guitar has it all!! BIG, fat and woody but at the same time very focused with great definition, mids are thick and honky which makes for a killer bridge position lead tone, great pinched harmonics all over the neck, top end has some bite and sizzle but still smooth and not at all hard or harsh. Guitar comes with Gibson certificate, Historic Makeovers certificate, letter from Dave Johnson and reissue brown Lifton case. Without the headstock repair, this guitar would easily bring 15K or more. So I think it’s well discounted and listed for a fair price.
